FAQs

How do I join the walking club?

If you would like to try one of our walks first before joining (see the walks programme for dates and meeting times) please do so. To join please contact our treasurer Gillian Copeland directly, or use our contact form
(click on small envelope icon on the top right of each webpage)
Annual membership is just £5 and our preferred methods of payment are either cash (payable to our treasurer in person) or by bank transfer (our treasurer will supply you with the club’s bank details and issue you with a membership card once paid up)

Where do you meet for walks?

We meet at Morrisons car park Morley, If your a member and live further a field e.g. Bramhope we can send the postcode of the meeting place of the walk in e.g. Ilkley, and you can meet us there. The time given in the walks list is the time we leave Morrison’s car park so please arrive a few minutes early to register and organise transport.

What is the cost of car sharing?:

We request passengers make a financial contribution to the driver to help share motoring costs. A suggested sum, based on distance travelled is included in the walks list.

Will I get a lift?

To date we have never had a problem accommodating all walkers. There is an expectation that car owners who can, will take their turn to drive and not always rely on others to do the driving.

What format do the walks take?

Generally have 2 meal stops, for elevenses and lunch with other rest breaks depending how tough the walk is. We walk as a group leaving no-one behind and go as fast as the slowest walker. We are usually back in Morley by 5pm but can be later after long walks.

What do I need to wear and take on a walk?

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT
To enjoy walking/hiking comfortably and safely, your footwear, clothing and equipment need to be suitable for the conditions, and it is advisable to come prepared for all eventualities.
Footwear with a good grip on the sole (e.g.Vibram sole) is the key to avoiding accidents
Waterproof walking/hiking boots providing ankle support and good grip are recommended (ideally worn in), and specialist walking socks in order to help avoid blisters. Walkers are advised to travel other footwear then change into and out of their walking boots at the start and end of the walk, placing muddy walking boots back into their travelling bag -this helps prevent the interior of the car that you might be sharing with fellow walkers becoming mudded up
Ice grippers are strongly advised for walks during icy weather (these fit over the soles of your boots and help prevent slipping and falls on icy footpaths)
Waterproof jacket and either waterproof trousers/overtrousers
Several thin layers of clothing, which can be added or removed, are better than a single thick layer (include spares) Fabrics (lightweight and fast-drying) designed for the outdoors are recommended
( please note that denim jeans are NOT suitable on any of our walks!)
Warm hat and gloves.
Gaiters are an optional but useful extra
Rucksack with a waterproof liner (a plastic bag liner will do)
Thermos flask with a hot drink
Water bottle ( suggest take at least 1 litre of liquid with you depending on the grade of walk)
Picnic lunch of your choice eg sandwich, piece(s) of fruit, snack bar/s-we normally stop for elevenses and lunch
Spare high-energy food such as a snack bar (carry one that you don’t like- that way its more likely to remain spare for emergencies)
Small torch and/or a headtorch
Basic small First aid kit (preferably including blister plasters)
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Walking poles are useful, particularly for descents and slippy terrain
Insect repellent
Sun hat or visa
Sunglasses
Sun cream
Camera
Phone
Map (your leader will be navigating but its always a good idea to carry relevant map)

How do I send in photos for publication on the Club website?

The club love having photos of our walks and we have quite a few photographers as a result we have drawn up a few guidelines.

  • Max number of images each walk is 20 for the website.
  • If three people send in 12 images, the best twenty images will be chosen and a smaller selection for our instagram.
  • If images are taken on a phone send them at ‘large size‘ not actual size email them to us.
  • If the photos are shot on a ‘good camera’, in this situation images must be max width 1500px (pixels) for a landscape shot or max height of 1200px for a portrait image.
  • Some people don’t want to be photographed, please respect that and check before taking shots.
  • Send images via email to Michelle with reference to which walk it is.
