Twixmas trip to Windermere December 2022

A big thank you to Andy and Annie for their input with this trip during which those going managed to do a walk despite the very wet weather and made the most of the rest of the break with lake cruises, NT and cinema visits, not to mention hitting the shops and tearooms. In the evening we had 2 excellent meals at the Lamplighter restaurant in Windemere where we all caught up with each other’s daytime adventures

Mid week walk Lower Nidderdale 21-12-22

Those who managed to escape christmas shopping did a circuit of Lower Nidderdale on a bright and breezy day- our numbers swelled by several new recruits who turned up in fancy dress-quite a pantomine

Annual Mince Pie walk 18-12-22

This year’s mince pie local walk from Morley was well attended and led by Mel-the cold weather called for a brisk pace on the walk followed by welcome hot drinks and the club’s traditional mince pie buffet at Mel’s house

Mid week walk Booth Wood Reservoir 14-12-22

December’s long walk: Langfield edge and Stoodley Pike 11-12-22

Mid week walk from Great Ouseburn 7-12-22

5 walkers travelled to Great Ouseburn on a bright and clear day to complete an 8 mile circular walk from the village through surrounding countryside and several villages (Little Ouseburn, Marton-cum-Grafton and Upper Dunsforth)-the villages were decorated for christmas and the countryside still had some autumnal colour in the trees. As usual, great company and all in all it was one of those good to be alive days ( and what a difference some sunshine makes!)

November medium walk: Otley Chevin 4-12-22

Five walkers went to Otley Chevin to do an 8.2 mile walk through woodland and along the Chevin with reasonably good views despite the rather grey weather- at one point we were directly under the flight path of homecoming aircraft to Leeds Bradford Airport located 2 miles away- a good walk with various points of interest in great company

Mid week walk from Goldsborough 30-11-22

6 of us ventured out on a rather grey weather day to do a 9.5 mile circular walk from Goldsborough- we went through the grounds of Ribston Hall stopping for elevenses in Little Ribston village, then on past Plompton Hall (near Plompton Rocks) and down to the river Nidd in Knaresborough where we stopped on its banks for lunch. Onward back to Goldsborough village where we checked out the village pub with its welcome log fire (it would have been rude not to!) before heading for home

Simonseat mid week walk 23-11-22

Light rain initially then turned sunny but a tad breezy. The path down from the top was effectively a stream.

November club adventure weekend in Matlock Bath

11 club members travelled to Matlock Bath for November’s adventure weekend, doing a walk to Black Rocks on saturday (with a short and longer option part way through) and staying overnight at Oakhill Hotel in nearby Cromford. The following day some visited the Christmas Market while others visited Bakewell- overall a very enjoyable weekend had by all.

November short club walk from Spofforth 20-11-22

17 club members ventured out for an easy 7 mile walk from Spofforth via Sicklinghall and tracks and fields between. The rain held off and had a beautiful sunny day with rain starting just after we finished! The ground however was very wet, we had to walk up a fast-running stream at one point

Mid week walk from Crowden 16-11-22

Six walkers led by Richard ventured over the Woodhead pass to Crowden from where we started the walk- good to see several reservoirs slowly refilling after the dry summer but still some way to go- the hills were high with some steep climbs and descents, but worth the climb for the long range views-weather changeable but we managed to dodge any rain at least while walking

November long walk: Cupola chimney 13-11-22

A murky foggy start from Morrisons this Sunday. An hour later the picture at Grassington different, little breeze, hazy blue skys, autumn leaves underfoot and trees nearly bare. A perfect walking day. Twelve of us today plus two dogs and off we went. A respectful Remembrance Sunday display in the Grassington Town centre. Bare House, Cupola Chimney, Linton Falls and 10 miles to go. A steepish climb for the first two miles got us shedding a layer. Autumn at its best, beautiful scenery illuminated by a low lying sun, sparse layers of cloud, and a gentle haze. Bare House for early snack and an impeccably observed 2 minutes silence for our lost hero’s at 11:00. Onward towards Cupola Chimney and lunch. The Ghyll’s were spectacular, limestone rock highlighted with rust bronzed bracken. Red Kites hovered and a chirpy whinchat paid us a brief visit along the drystone wall. Just a little mention for the rabbits. Low Green and a cheeky coffee before our walk back to Grassington along the river Wharf. Partly flooded fields attracting gulls and geese. The singing of great tits accompanied us. At the torrent of Linton falls a lone grey heron stalked its prey. A beautiful day for walking lead by Sue, great scenery and company.

Club Quiz Night 11-11-22

The club’s recent quiz night at Morley cricket club was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who went-a big thank you to Annie and Andy for organising such a great evening, also special thanks to their team of helpers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes

Mid week walk from Silsden 9-11-22

Nine walkers travelled to Silsden to do a 9 mile curcuit from Silsden to Addingham and Addingham Moorside-the weather was much wetter than anticipated and keeping warm and dry proved to be a challenge (this was possibly the wettest walk to date this year)-despite that it was a really good route walked in excellent company with some good long range views and a series of rainbows throughout the day.

Rylstone medium walk 6-11-22

Seven club members completed a gentle 8 mile circuit through rolling countryside from Rylstone starting off in light rain which thankfully didnt last long-good views along the route of the ridge above Rylstone,Flasby Fell, Winterburn reservoir and surrounding countryside

East Keswick, Sicklinghall and Harewood mid week walk 2-11-22

We managed to keep ahead of the rain forecast walking a 9 mile circuit from East Keswick partly alongside the river Wharfe-weather breezy and overcast but with some good long range views and thankfully no rain

Hare head and Bolton Abbey mid week walk 26-10-22

In mixture of sunshine and showers eight mid week walkers did a moderately strenuous walk with several ups and downs, superb long range views from the grassy ridge of Hare head over Barden moor and Wharfedale, after which we descended to Bolton Abbey and followed the Dales way riverside path to Bolton Bridge before heading back across moorland to our starting point in Draughton village.

Organised by Glynis and Lizzie, eight MWC veterans visited Shibden Hall for a walk in the grounds now looking very autumnal followed by some wonderful scones at the cafe afterwards.

Harewood mid week walk 19-10-22

We were treated with some lovely autumnal colours along our route around the periphery of the Harewood estate, which also took us past the Emmerdale set. Despite mainly overcast weather it was mild with some reasonable long range views

Purston Park 16-10-22

Sunshine all the way on this short MWC Sunday walk from Purston Park via Ackworth. 14 walkers, a little nip in the air soon warmed as the morning past. Level walking for 7 miles on good paths through parks, fields and country lanes- the route went past Ackworth Hall and the plague stone (filled with vinegar during the plague so that people could disinfect coins prior to paying for goods.

Stoodley Pike mid week walk 12-10-22

If you missed this walk we were actually walking out December’s long walk and what a varied it walk was with whole range of scenery and weather conditions-Stoodley pike was at times not visible in the mist during our ascent but we did get a much better view on the way down again-the verdict: a highly recommended walk

Rivelin Valley walk 9-10-22

Mid week walk Queensbury 14-9-22

The day started surprisingly cold, with us not removing layers until lunchtime when the sun appeared. 5 walkers set out, Carol, Robin, John, Alec and Andy. We certainly found out how hilly Bradford can be, the only flat bit being the old railway through Queensbury Station.

Seven veteran members met up mid week and walked from Beningborugh Hall to the confluence of the Rivers Nidd and Ouse near Nun Monkton, lunch was taken at Home Farm Cafe on the Beningbrough estate.

Derwent Edge club long walk 11-9-22

Eight club members ventured into the Dark Peak area to do September’s long walk led by Sue Williams along Derwent Edge- after a misty start the weather turned out to be a little better than expected (again) and we had some excellent long range views. The reservoir water levels were unsurprisingly low to the extent of being able to see remains of the village under Ladybower reservoir.

Whitby club day trip 10-9-22

The club day trip to Whitby (kindly arranged by Bev Gaunt) proved very popular and was a huge success. 14 members were dropped off at Robin Hood’s Bay then walked 7 miles along the Cleveland Way coastal path to Whitby with stunning views -surprisingly it was rather muddy and sometimes treacherous in places but the last 2 miles were in glorious sunshine and the walkers met up with the others in Whitby- in summary a grand day out

Mid Week walk in the Washburn Valley and around Thruscross reservoir

Six mid week walkers travelled to Blubberhouses where we started our walk following the river Washburn northwards to Thruscross reservoir. We then made a circuit around the reservoir. The water level being very low following our dry summer to the point where ruins of the sunken village of West End were visible. Our return path back to BLubberhouses again followed the river Washburn, this being a so called lollipop shaped walk. Good weather despite the not so good forecast.

September medium walk in the south Pennines Piethhorn Valley

11 walkers travelled to the Piethorn Valley in the South Pennines to do a 9 mile circuit led by Ian- we came across no less than 8 reservoirs along our route, mostly rather empty looking after the dry summer. 6 mid week walkers went to Barwick-in-Elmet to walk a 10 mile circuit which took us through surrounding villages (including Scholes and Aberford), countryside and woodland in which we came across the uniquely shaped Maggie’s tree.
