Three Peaks Challenge Walk - Saturday 6th August 2011 (for full report see Walking Reports page)

On behalf of all the walkers I would like to say a big Thank you to Sue & Glynis for all their hard work and encouragement and also to the back up team who were brilliant.

Well done to Adele, Rod, Uncle Mike and Mark from the Middleton Equestrian Centre (whose charity we were helping out with as well as the Club’s challenge) all succeeded in completing the walk in 11 hours 30 minutes.  Jill, Val, Andy, Morwenna, Charlie the Dog and our leader Sue also finished in 11 hours 30 minutes (by the way, Charlie the Dog was a little star).  He started out as a very white dog and finished as a very brown dog  and maybe slightly shorter legs.  Glynis, Elise and Michelle finished in just under 12 hours so we all completed the challenge in under the allotted time and can now call ourselves “ The Three Peakers”.  Our back up team were there to greet everybody coming in and made us all feel special.  (Photos will follow shortly).

Alternative 40th Anniversary night with a 70’s theme

Last Saturday (20th August) 70 members including Founder Members enjoyed the Alternative 40th Anniversary night with a 70’s theme. We were treated to a selection of entertainment including a Quiz by Lizzie, singing by “ The grumpy old men” AKA “The singing Nuns” AKA Bill,  Dave B and Roy accompanied on the piano by the lovely Michelle as well as jokes and a monolog from Colin. Dave also did a wonderful  slide show entitled “MWC, Throughout the years” followed by Michelle’s 3 peaks; showing 15 members including Charlie the Dog doing the challenge and all the back up support team on Saturday  6th August 2011.  Jeremy did a great job once again as our resident DJ with a groovy selection of 70’s hits. Lots of members had come in 70’s outfits and there were prizes for the winning Lady and Gentleman plus runner-up prizes. There was also a ticket draw with a prize. Huge Thanks to Tony Gill who donated the bottle of Vodka. I’d like to say a Big Thank You to everyone who helped with this event in anyway and all of our wonderful members for making such a tasty faith supper of both savoury and sweet treats. The atmosphere was great and a good time was had by all. Here’s to many more to come!!

Ros & Marian are back from their travels and here's a little about the trip from Ros

Marian and I had a fabulous time; lots of highlights and happy memories, funny happenings, occasionally not-so-good things, but saw lots of amazing spectacular scenery, discovered beautiful places as well as plants and animals, and met some lovely people. When I hired a car a couple of times I found myself driving on some very narrow scary mountain roads, but I achieved my big aim of walking the 16km Sentier Martel section of Gorges du Verdon in France!  What a day! The temperatures at the time were scorching and I was beginning to think I wouldn’t be able to do the walk because of the heat but my Guide was willing to start early. It took ˝ hour to reach the bottom of the Gorge- 600m (1800ft) and then although we followed the line of the river it was not straightforward walking! I’d heard about walking through tunnels and climbing up metal staircases but I didn’t know I had to do any scrambling up cliffs and across slippery slopes, or hang onto a cable whilst facing a cliff, my body leaning backwards and my feet trying to grip a steeply sloping path! Coming back up to the top of the gorge was really difficult as the temperature had soared to around 40*. For those of you who know what I look like climbing any sort of hill - my face was very red! It took 6 hours to complete the walk of which a good hour was just getting to the top of the gorge when we staggered into a cafe for a long cool drink!

Hope you like the pics.

Love Ros xx
