Morley Walking Club Cycling Programme 2012
Cycling Group Riders meet in Morrison’s car park, on the fourth Sunday of each month (and other occasions, depending on the weather and the mood!). Bring the same kit as you would for walking, ie waterproofs, suitable clothing, something to eat and drink. If you don’t have any means of carrying your bike on a car, please ask around among the cycling group – but of course it may not always be possible to find someone with spare capacity. Cycling holidays are an annual event.
Cycling Holiday, Summer 2012
Be aware that in 2012 the usual Late May Bank Holiday is being moved by the Government to June 4th and 5th (something to do with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee). To avoid the associated school holiday / high hotel costs, and to minimise clashes with Adventure Group plans, the Cycling Week will commence on Sunday 27th May, and end on Saturday 2nd June.
We will stay at the Duke’s Folly Hotel in Southport. It’s a very quirky place, with themed rooms (you can stay in a Roman Temple Room, a Castle Room, and Chinese Room and all sorts of other oddities). All rooms are en-suite. Some have baths and others have showers. Likewise, some have double beds, some have twin beds and some are singles. We can sort out who has which nearer the time, but it’s fun to consider which you might prefer. The hotel owner will accommodate our bikes within his building, and there is a free hotel car park, and a nice bar and lounge in which we can meet each evening.
The deal, if there are enough of us, is £30 per night, per person, for bed and breakfast. Breakfasts are copious – you can have fresh fruit, cereals and croissants, or cooked breakfast, or everything at once if you want. The hotel is just off Lord Street, with easy access to all the lovely shops, bus and train services to Liverpool and Preston etc. There is a huge Morrison’s supermarket within 5 minutes walk (handy for supplies), and a lovely Leisure Centre with swimming pool more or less next door to the Morrison’s. You can also walk within minutes to a funfair and a pier, and some excellent restaurants.
The Tourist Information Centre issue a leaflet showing the numerous cycle routes in the vicinity. Glynis plans to lead a ride to Martin Mere Nature Reserve, and I will do one down the coast to Crosby, to see the Iron Men on the beach (Another Place, by Anthony Gormley). Other ride leaders please let me know what you have in mind once we get there.
If you want to come along please let Lizzie have your deposit of £15 per person.
